Nounstates
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A state is a set of institutions that possess the authority to make the rules that govern the people in one or more societies, having internal and external sovereignty over a definite territory. In Max Weber's influential definition, it is that organization that has a "monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory." It thus includes such institutions as the armed forces, civil service or state bureaucracy, courts, and police. Although the term often refers broadly to all institutions of government or rule—ancient and modern—the modern state system bears a number of characteristics that were first consolidated in western Europe, beginning in earnest in the 15th century, when the term "state" also acquired its current meaning. Thus the word is often used in a strict sense to refer only to modern political systems. Within a federal system, the term state also refers to political units, not sovereign themselves, but subject to the authority of the larger state, or federal union, such as the "states and territories of Australia" and the "states" in the United States. In casual usage, the terms "country," "nation," and "state" are often used as if they were synonymous; but in a more strict usage they can be distinguished:

My corporation is incorporated in CA and has an branch in TX, we sell products to many other states. Do we have to file state income tax for every state we sell to? I also have a branch in TX Asked by sammyh3r3 - Tue Sep 12 13:10:46 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are several different taxes you need to consider, basically sales, franchise and income taxes. Each has different requirements that give you nexus (aka a tax term for physical presence in a state) and are not interchangeable. Each state has different laws, although many items are similar. But it is easiest to know where you sell and how it is sold (the activity) in those states. For example, if you are based in CA with your branch in TX and you sell to other states, delivering the product via third carrier then changes are most likely that you do not need to find any sort of taxes in another state. However, if you employ sales people who work in states other than TX & CA, you might have potential nexus for sales tax and even… [cont.] Answered by Molly - Tue Sep 12 23:26:42 2006 Why are the economies of red states going up while that of blue states going down? Q. What city in the United States would you recommend friends to visit and what is one city in the United States you would not recommend friends to visit? The City I recommend is Chicago and the City I least recommend is Detroit. Asked by Mr. Knowledgeable VI - Thu Feb 22 12:01:04 2007 - - 10 Answers - 1 Comments A. Chicago, hands down. It might be because I've been born and raised in the burbs of Chicago, but it has everything: music, food, museums, a great nightlife, businesses, great colleges, festivals!!, and everything else you will ever need. My second place would be Washington DC, because it is amazing. A great nightlife, politicians around every corner, more happy hours than you can count, museums that are free, great public transportation, good food, etc. Again, I might be biased because I lived there for awhile. Yeah Detroit is not the best place ever, but a lot of the town outside of there are great. If you want a good Michigan city, try Grand Rapids, it's now the largest city in MI and it is pretty rockin for a small city.
