Unfortunately the glue sticks to the surface of the wood and must be sanded off. peel , and or pull the stuff that does come off. HEAT may be applied to loosed the adhesive but yes can cause a fire, that stuff is flammable! Get off as much as you can , and sand sand sand. At some point you will have sanded off all of the chunks of tile and glue that remained. Then it would have to be fine sanded, treated, stain if you wish and sealed. It is a BIG job, something that you wouldnt finish your self in one weekend. It will go in steps depending on how much of time you have to devote to doing this.
